adaptive reuse of a roman ruinAt the start of the disruption of COVID, my friend and I decided to wait out the halted constructon and hiring freezes by working on a competition entry. The competition was to design a modern art museum in the ruined shell of an ancient Roman aqueduct. The underground tank was less infrastructure and more cathedral, and our approach sought to supplement the beautiful space with completely modular dressings. These allowed the space to radically transform, artist to artist, while also not cluttering the inherently magical nature of this hidden grotto—a shrine to engineering.
Because we entered the competition quite late, rather than focus our energies on the traditional suite of renders, we dove into detailing the systems we invented to a playful and absurd level. Our intervention circulates hints of water, draws sharp columns of light into the murky darkness, and creates an above-ground contemporary reinterpretation of the 1st century Roman villa.
